Daslook

The Daslook (Allium ursinum) is a plant of the look family (Alliaceae). It is a very rare species in Belgium and the Netherlands. The species is legally protected.

The ursnum (= of the bears, Ursus = bear), originated by the old superstition that, after their hibernation, the bears first made their credit to this plant. This is also the reason why the plant is sometimes called berelook. The name of the daslook can be derived from debris, which used to be among these plants.

The oval leaves are 3-5 cm wide, dark green and parallel. The pure white flowers have six white flower sheets and are grouped into loose spherical screens.

The plant is blooming from April to June, sometimes until July. The plant grows 30-40 cm high. The plant often grows in groups and draws attention quickly through the strong onion air. The flower contains six stamens and a three-part pestle. These are surrounded by six wide oval flower sheets. The seeds are black-brown.
