Woudagemaal in Lemmer, Netherlands
The Ir. DF Woudagemaal is the largest working steam pumping station in the world. It was opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina and was tasked with pumping excess water from Friesland into the Zuiderzee, and later the IJsselmeer. In 1966, the Woudagemaal was reinforced by the electric Hooglandgemaal in Stavoren. It is owned by Wetterskip Fryslân. During extremely high water, the historic steam pumping station is still used to discharge excess water into the IJsselmeer.
