100 years of WWI: Research into an effective commemoration

In 2014-2018 it will be a hundred years since the First World War took place. As one of the objectives for its project for the centennial commemoration of WWI, the Government of Flanders has stated that the commemorations must convey a message of peace.

This report examines how this objective can be achieved. This is done firstly by examining under what conditions a peace-oriented war commemoration can be normative and historically justified. Secondly, on the basis of a survey of stakeholders and practitioners, it will be investigated how contemporary commemoration can be linked to a peace idea in practice.
