Simple and composite materials: Self-Guided Learning


A bundle on simple and composite substances that pursues the following objectives:

  • discuss characteristics of a selection of single substances, such as: occurrence, extraction, preparation, physical properties, chemical properties, applications;
  • of a selection of compound indicate at least one application, a sensory or a physicochemical characteristic. In addition, explain that the origin of a pure substance, whether naturally occurring or synthetically prepared, does not affect its properties;
  • explain the meaning of chemical energy;
  • cite examples of substances used as a source of chemical energy;
  • illustrate the concepts of exo- and endo-energetic with examples of chemical processes;
  • recognize the electrolysis of water as an endo-energetic process;
  • recognizing a combustion as an exo-energetic process.
