Welbevinden op school onder de aandacht met mindfulness
We leven in een snelle en drukke maatschappij waarbij je al eens durft te vergeten om te rusten en te ontstressen. 'Scholen zijn de uitgelezen plaats om geestelijk welbevinden bespreekbaar te maken', zegt klinisch psycholoog en gedragstherapeut Filip Raes in Klasse.
Het is dan ook geen grote verrassing dat steeds meer leraren 'mindfulnessoefeningen' in hun lesgeven verwerken. Met de oefeningen hopen ze dat leerlingen meer rust voelen en zelfvertrouwen krijgen, maar ook zelf meer ontspannen voor de klas staan.
'Daag leerlingen uit om van de stilte te proeven'
'Mindfulness helpt me om te gaan met mijn eigen onrust. Je legt de focus eerst op jezelf om dan met bewuste aandacht bij de leerling te kunnen zijn. Rust ervaren van binnen, is van cruciaal belang om de oefeningen te doen met je leerlingen', laat Mia Jansen, lerares secundair in het Atlas College in Genk en voorzitster van de Commissie Onderwijs bij vzw Moment ons weten.
Mia merkt dat haar leerlingen openstaan voor het thema en graag vragen stellen. 'Er is niets mis om mindfulness in een lessenreeks aan te bieden. Toch geloof ik sterk in de kracht van korte 'mindfulle momentjes' in de les. Je gebruikt een aandachtsoefening beter op het moment dat je leerlingen het nodig hebben. Voor een toets, bij veel tumult, om te concentreren bij het begin van de les ... Simpele oefeningen helpen je daar bij. Laat ze bijvoorbeeld de ogen even sluiten of focus op de juiste zithouding.'
'Je moet durven en proberen. Ooit moest ik tijdens de studie toezicht houden en daagde de leerlingen uit. 'Willen jullie van de stilte proeven?', vroeg ik. Ze waren enthousiast en we maakten er een fijn lesuur van. Een leerling met gedragsproblemen stapte achteraf naar me toe en vertelde me dat zulke rustsessies was wat ze nodig had.'
Professor Filip Raes, gaat zelfs verder: 'We hebben onderzoek gedaan bij leerlingen in het secundair onderwijs. De leerlingen die mindfulness volgden, vertoonden effectief minder angsten, stress en depressie – ook op langere termijn.'

Mindfulness, wat is dat?
Mindfulness is een combinatie van oosters boeddhisme en technieken uit de westerse psychotherapie. 'Het is aandachtig zijn voor wat er in het hier en nu gebeurt op een aanvaardende en niet-veroordelende manier. Concreet: stilstaan bij wat er in je en rond je gebeurt zonder dat je er van alles begint bij te denken', zegt Raes.
Mia Jansen: 'Ik heb een coaching gevolgd over welbevinden bij jongeren. Toen ik in mijn klas communicatievaardigheden mocht geven, ben ik vol goede moed naar mijn directie gestapt met de vraag om aan de slag te gaan met mindfulness. Mijn directeur steunde me meteen. Ik startte met een reeks van tien lesjes.'
'Leerlingen houden nu zelfs hun middagpauze vrij om samen oefeningen te doen. Reacties als 'zalig om 's avonds zo rustig in slaap te vallen', of 'het helpt om me beter te concentreren', doen me goed.
Hulpmiddel voor iedereen?
'Soms werkt het niet, ook niet bij jongeren op scholen. Dus we mogen zeker niet te hard van stapel lopen. Je kan niet verwachten dat het altijd en bij iedereen helpt. Misschien werkt het soms ook voor een stuk omdat jongeren in groep samen praten over problemen. Weten dat je niet de enige bent die piekert, kan al helpen', zegt onderzoeker Raes.
