Sleutelcompetentie: ruimtelijk bewustzijn
Ruimtelijk bewustzijn ontwikkelen heeft te maken met vaardig worden in ruimtelijk relationeel denken en bewust ruimtelijk handelen.
Ruimtelijk bewustzijn is gestoeld op een sterk mentaal kaartbeeld en een breed ruimtelijk referentiekader. Dit verrijken we doorheen de jaren met relevante kennis van de situering van plaatsen, patronen processen … op aarde maar ook in het zonnestelsel en het heelal. Het gaat hierbij om zowel fysische als sociaal-economische thema’s. De leerlingen leren daarnaast een aantal basisprincipes van ruimtelijke lokalisatie.
Plaatsen van elkaar onderscheiden
Naast de situering is er aandacht voor plaatsbegrip. We plaatsen lokale, nationale en internationale gebeurtenissen in een geografisch kader. Aan de hand van zogenaamde 'landschapsvormende' lagen bouwen leerlingen systematisch een breed geografisch kader op. Voorbeelden van die lagen zijn vegetatie, reliëf, bevolkingsdichtheid, welvaart … De leerlingen leren kenmerken van een bepaalde plaats beschrijven en onderzoeken en kunnen zo plaatsen van elkaar onderscheiden.
Ruimtelijke patronen en processen
Na de beschrijving van het landschap gaan we dieper in op het dynamische aspect. Leerlingen herkennen, begrijpen en voorspellen processen en interacties waardoor plaatsen voortdurend veranderen.
Voorbeelden van zulke interacties zijn die tussen politiek-economische variabelen en migratiestromen of die tussen klimaatverandering en landbouw. We bekijken het ruimtelijke systeem als geheel, wat meer complexe denkvaardigheden vereist, en waarbij de nadruk ligt op het verklarende en het onderzoekende.
Van atlas tot bodemonderzoek
Tot slot maken we kennis met het instrumentarium om ruimtelijke patronen en processen te onderzoeken. Leerlingen gebruiken materialen en instrumenten zoals atlassen, GIS-viewers en terreintechnieken (bv. bodemonderzoek).
