The concern for the good teacher: a critical look at the concept of competence


The last two decades appeared in the Netherlands and Flanders professional standards and professional profiles for teachers and teacher trainers. Thus we follow an international trend. Professional standards are in education today has become so familiar and obvious that we no longer dwell on this way to talk about the "good teacher." In this article, we combine a research approach with an opinionated approach to formulate some comments on the concept of competence as the central question is how to care for the good teacher can relate to the mandatory standard that professional standards and competence lists inextricably appear along with it bring. We start on the one hand the findings of two empirical studies that occurred independently. On the other hand we offer with this article a rendering of a symposium at the Congress for teacher trainers 2012 'On the wall' in Antwerp.
