Gone West: Artistic commemoration of the Great War in West Flanders

To go west is an old English (Celtic) expression and means as many as die or go west of the dead, with the setting sun along. The phrase was massively used by soldiers and War Poets and got a very literal sense: the Allied front was present in the western part of the Western Front. The dead and wounded were therefore literally brought to the west.

This event will give substantive meaning to the commemoration of 100 years of the Great War in West Flanders was named Gone West. The cultural tourism commemoration connects countless life stories with a thorough understanding of history. Gone West unlocks these small and big stories through music, dance, theater events and literature and the visual arts. These events will take place during the commemoration year 2014-2018.
