Iedereen praat tegenwoordig over fake news of nepnieuws. Alternatieve nieuwssites, platformen als Google en Facebook, politieke partijen én zelfs kritische media die ernaar linken halen er voordeel uit.
Wat is desinformatie?
Het opzettelijk verspreiden van misleidende informatie om te voorkomen dat een doelgroep juiste conclusies kan trekken en zich correcte meningen kan vormen. Desinformatie wordt gemaakt door mensen die doelbewust het publiek willen bedriegen, zodat het iets anders gaat geloven. Het komt regelmatig voor dat een gedeelte van de waarheid wordt vermengd met leugens en valse conclusies.
Tijdens de Koude Oorlog bijvoorbeeld was desinformatie een erkende militaire en politieke strategie.
Wat is fake news?
Dat zijn berichten, vermomd als nieuwsberichten, die mensen desinformeren. Ze worden verspreid via websites, sociale media en traditionele media met als doel winst te maken of de publieke opinie te beïnvloeden. We gebruiken het begrip nu vaak als verzamelnaam. Er zijn echter nuances tussen propaganda, slechte journalistiek, reclame en satire.

Wat is het verschil met misinformatie?
Bij misinformatie is de informatie die je krijgt ook foutief, maar werd het niet gemaakt met de bedoeling om iemand te schaden.
Hoe pakken we het aan?
Voor een oplossing moeten we in verschillende richtingen kijken. Velen leggen de verantwoordelijkheid bij Google of Facebook. Anderen vinden dat journalisten en factcheckers hun rol goed moeten vervullen. Daarnaast moeten burgers kritisch leren omgaan met online informatie. Je kan desinformatie dus bestrijden in de productie en de verspreidingskanalen of bij de ontvangers.
